Las Vegas Children’s Dentistry encourages children to have dental sealants placed on permanent adult teeth. Within 6 months of erupting adult molars can become decayed in the pits and fissures of the tooth. This is because pits and fissures allow bacteria a perfect hiding place to grow and eventually turn sugar into acid. The acidic erosion of tooth enamel creates a cavity in these pits of fissures. Dental sealants can last as long as 5 to 10 years. Depending on a child’s risk factors, sealants may be applied to the teeth as young as age 6 years of age. Sealants are a clear protective coating that is applied to the tooth enamel.
Dental sealants can be applied without any drilling or anesthetic. This is an easy and great way to prevent dental decay. The process includes cleaning the tooth, applying acid etch, bonding, and finally applying sealant to the tooth. The final result is a tooth with a clear plastic protective coating. After several months the sealant will be mechanically worn away on the chewing surface of the tooth, but the sealant material will remain in the pits and fissures of teeth, thus preventing bacteria from creating a cavity in those areas.
Sealants can also be applied to the front teeth, if pits are found on the lingual side of anterior teeth. Dental sealants can be applied more than once. If your child’s dental sealant falls out or is worn away by chewing, we can re apply the sealant to further protect the tooth. Ask our pediatric dentist if your child has pits and fissures that need the be sealed. Las Vegas Children’s Dentistry has both pediatric dentists and orthodontists that can evaluate and treat your child’s dental needs.
